Make Gmail the default Firefox 3 Mail Client!

If you are one of the users who is not using a desktop mail client anymore but one who relies on online mail clients such as Gmail then you might like the following tip coming directly from the official Gmail blog. It is possible, and pretty easy, to make Gmail the default Firefox 3 Mail client. The default client is the one that is loaded whenever a mailto link is clicked in Firefox 3.

To do that you need to complete the following steps. Head over to Gmail and sign in as usual. Once that is done paste the following line of Javascript code into the location bar of Firefox 3 and hit enter. This will add Gmail as one additional protocol handler for the mailto protocol:javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","Gmail")

A line will appear on top of the screen asking if you want to add Gmail as an application for mailto links. A click on Add Application adds the handler, a click on the X button closes the request and changes nothing.

Now head over to Tools > Options > Applications in Firefox 3 and filter for the mailto protocol. Use the drop down menu on the right side to select Gmail as the default client for mailto links and make sure to hit ok to confirm the change. Congratulations, you just added Gmail as the default Firefox 3 Mail Client.

Best Firefox 3 Addons 2008!

No Squint - NoSquint allows you to adjust the default text zoom level, and optionally remembers the level per site. Also Zooms whole sites to fit the resolution on your widescreen or lcd flatscreen monitor. This add-on is a must have I love it!

Ad-Block Plus - Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them.

No Script - The best security you can get in a web browser! Allow JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from sites you trust.

FlagFox - Displays a country flag in the status bar depicting the location of the current website’s server, and provides quick access to detailed location and webserver information. Shows Ip and Hostname of site on mouseover of country Flag.

Video Download Helper - The easy way to download and convert Web videos from hundreds of YouTube-like sites. This works also for audio and picture galleries.

Stylish - Stylish allows easy management of user styles. User styles empower your browsing experience by letting you fix ugly sites, customize the look of your browser or mail client, or just have fun. With an online repository at userstyles.org, you don’t even need to know how to write styles yourself; just a couple clicks and the chosen style is applied. Stylish is to CSS what Greasemonkey is to JavaScript, and unlike other methods of using user styles, most styles take effect immediately. User guide: http://userstyles.org/stylish/help

SmoothWheel - SmoothWheel offers an enhanced and configurable version of the built in smooth-scroll. It uses some unique algorithms for smoothness and adaptive behavior (scrolls fast or slow according to the “intention” of the user). Allows to read long web pages easily. You can actually read WHILE scrolling. Kind of like the credits at the end of a movie, but controlled by scrolling the mouse wheel. Works with text-boxes and drop-down boxes too.

Greasemonkey - Greasemonkey is a Firefox extension that allows you to customize the way webpages look and function. Hundreds of scripts are already available for free. And if you’re the savvy sort, you can also write your own.
Find user scripts

AeroFox - Aero Fox redone for Firefox 3. Aero style glassy buttons on a glossy background. Nice looking theme (Use small Icons!)

Vista on Xp - You don’t like the green in the XP theme of Firefox 3? Get the blue one of Vista for your XP!

Cs Lite - This extension will allow you to easily control cookie permissions. It can be accessed from the statusbar, a toolbar button, or the context menu. Just click on the icon to allow, block, or temporarily allow the site to set cookies. You can also view, clear or edit the cookies and exceptions by right clicking on the cs lite icon. For safer browsing you may choose to deny cookies globally and then enable them on a per site basis. You can also download a blocklist that contains a list of untrusted hosts that you may choose to import into FF and block. The blocklist can be configured to automatically update or can be updated manually. This is a lighter, scaled down version of CookieSafe. It contains less features, but is considerably easier to use. The extension has been completely recoded from top to bottom making this the most stable version to date.

NetLimiter 2 ultimate internet traffic control and monitoring tool!

Do you know which applications and processes connect to the Internet on your computer ? If you use a firewall chance is that you had to define rules to allow certain programs the right to connect to the Internet. Sometimes however users think of this as a burden and use low security settings to prevent that they are being pestered all day with questions from their Firewall.

Netlimiter 2 Monitor is a sweet software that displays all open processes and applications on the system detailing their incoming and outgoing bandwidth along with ports, IP addresses and process numbers. That’s basically the same amount of information that my previous favorite Currports is displaying.

The first difference is that Netlimiter Monitor has a history function where it is displaying which applications connected to the Internet before on your system. Great for quickly checking out if an app is among the list that should not be there.

It’s definitely a great application if you want to evaluate the bandwidth usage of a process or software. I used it to keep an eye on Skype to see if my computer was used as a Skype supernode.

The Pro version of Netlimiter adds some interesting functions like Traffic Shaping, Network support, Network Tools like Whois and Traceroute, Remote Administration and Advanced Rules.

Forgot your Windows NT/2k/XP/Vista admin password?

NT stores its user information, including crypted versions of the passwords, in a file called ’sam’, usually found in \windows\system32\config. This file is a part of the registry, in a binary format previously undocumented, and not easily accessible. But thanks to a German(?) named B.D, I’ve now made a program that understands the registry.

This site provides CD and floppy images for end users to easily edit their forgotten passwords. But it also provides full source code and binary builds of the tools to allow others to use as they like for other purposes. Registry format documentation also available.

  • This is a utility to (re)set the password of any user that has a valid (local)
  • account on your Windows NT/2k/XP/Vista etc system.
  • You do not need to know the old password to set a new one.
  • It works offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a floppydisk or CD or another system.
  • Will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts!
  • There is also a registry editor and other registry utilities that works under linux/unix, and can be used for other things than password editing.

Latest release is 080526 (2008-05-26)

The following is available for download and information:

THIS SOFTWARE COMES WITH NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER. THE AUTHOR IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE (MIS)USE OF THIS SOFTWARE!

I used this software and finished the process on my sons computer in 5 minutes after I burned the iso to cd and it worked extremely well! There are alternative ways but this is the best cause its FREE!

Ive not tested this one but seems to work for many people!

If you forgot your password there is a much simpler way to reset it. while booting up you’re PC usually it will tell you that if you want to change settings then pres the F8 button (this my very by computer type I.E different F buttons) this will usually give you a prompt asking where you would like to boot from, you should select HDD-1 or wherever windows resides. next it should give you a prompt asking if you would like to boot in “safe mode” or a host of other “modes” (you can also get here by doing hard resets while booting up windows, though this is not recommended) once safe mode is selected hit enter. it will boot up but everything will look but ugly however you now have an administrator account called “Administrator” in which you have complete access to all windows files and accounts including the ability to change passwords, YAY!! now when all is done and taken care of, restart you’re computer and boot it up normally.

Free Avira AntiVir Rescue System CD to Clean Unremovable Virus

The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to repair a damaged system, to rescue data or to scan the system for virus infections. Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer. The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day (contains the current virus definitions VDF) so that the most recent security updates are always available.

Once you’ve booted up your computer with Avira Rescue System, you get a boot option to either boot from hard drive or AntiVir Rescue System. Press the number 2 on your keyboard to boot into AntiVir Rescue System. It will start loading linux and you get to select either deutsch or english. Next, drivers will be loaded, and when it completes, the Rescue Systemmain menu will show.

To scan a computer, select the second option “Scan” and hit enter. You get to select whether to scan all files, only program files or only boot sectors. You can then select either to log scanning events or try to repair infected files. If Rescue System is unable to repair infected files, you have the option to rename the files. Finally, you can select additional file types to scan such as dialers, jokes, games, and security privacy risk software. The whole process simplifies the command-line arguments so you don’t need to manually type the commands.

The open command at the main menu will launch Linux console, not DOS command prompt. Unless you’re familiar with Linux commands, I wouldn’t recommend you selecting that option. If you’ve accidentally got into the linux console, press CTRL+F1 simultaneously to go back to Rescue System Main Menu.

According to the latest report rom AV-Comparatives, Avira AntiVir scored the highest points for Retrospective / ProActive test on May 2008. It has the least false positives and fast on demand scanning speed.

Nice Search Engines!

Microsoft just made a 100 million acquisition of semantic search engine Powerset in its bit to improve existing Internet Searching Technologies for its Live Search. I use Live Search regularly and would say the results are now very comparable to Google and in the case of Image Search much better organised.

Better search is always good, but as a lot of people have been expressing, searching in natural language (“what is the capital of France?”) is not too useful for anyone who has used the Internet up to now. What I would like to see in a search engine is one that can differentiate “free” products from “free download!” or “free 30 day trial!”

Anyway for such a dominated market with Google going on over 60% market share (and even more mind share) a lot of competitors pop up quite frequently. For many niche markets and specific type searches these can be much better, so here are a couple of the better ones:

FilesTube

A search engine for file sharing. FilesTube indexes downloadable files across the Internet. Works quite well, especially with the filtering of files to ‘mp3’, ‘mpeg’ etc.

PDF Search Engine

A search engine for PDFs, E-Books and other electronic documents. Has simple but effective searching.

Twingly

Mentioned it here a few days ago. A new blog search engine, I’m interested to see who it manages to compete against the larger but ailing Technorati which recently got a new round of funding.

Icon Look

I’ve seen a few Icon search engines but Icon Look is the best one I’ve used both results wise and its interface. You’ll find both small and high resolution icons, a useful resource for anyone doing design work.

Retrevo

This service is designed to match a product with a manual. Actually a very good search engine for doing product research before purchasing.

Look Torrent

I used Scrape Torrent for quite some time, but I recently found Look Torrent which is an awesome search engine for finding torrent files. Its best feature is the option to select your favourite torrent sites for it to search.

How many hours have your hard disks been running?

Can you tell me how many hours your hard disk or Solid State Disk has been running and how many times it has been powered on since you started using it in your computer ? My Samsung 1 TB hard drive was powered on 106 times and active for 814 hours since I build my new computer a few months ago.

How I know that ? I looked it up in the software Crystal Disk Info. This software basically displays all kind of information about hard drives and Solid State Disks and two that are not displayed in every other of that type are the two I mentioned above.

It does display all the usual information as well. Begins with the hard disk temperature, serial number, transfer mode, drive letters and supported features among other parameters. Two of the aforementioned parameters are worth a closer look if you are experiencing crashes or slow downs.

The temperature of the hard drive can be a cause for system crashes. It if goes to high it can lead to data loss and errors. The transfer mode can be interesting if you think that your hard drive is not as fast as it should be. Check the supported transfer modes of your drive and compare them to the one that is currently being used for it. It might very well be that it’s not the fastest available.

Crystal Disk Info is a portable application that is compatible to Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows Server 2003 / 2008.

FreeWare DecaffeinatID: A Very Simple IDS Log Watching App ARPWatch For Windows!

Windows only: Freeware application DecaffeinatID is a simple intrusion detection and alert system for your PC that monitors your Windows logs for suspicious behavior. DecaffeinatID will pop up an alert in your system tray whenever there’s an attempted remote login to your computer, and it detects changes in your firewall log, or your ARP changes. The application is currently in beta and not a foolproof intrusion detection system by any means, but it’s also not a bad tool to run in your system tray next time you connect to the Wi-Fi at your local coffee shop. DecaffeinatID is freeware, Windows only.

Firefox 3 Final Portable!

A good way to test Firefox 3 without having to install it over your precious Firefox 2 client is to download and run the Firefox 3 portable version which comes with all features of Firefox 3 but does not tamper with previous versions of Firefox in any way. The portable client uses its own profile which is located in the same directory structure as the program’s files.

It pretty much does everything that Firefox 3 can do as well. It is possible to install extensions and themes for instance. Bookmarks can best be imported into the portable version. Just point it to your bookmarks.html file in your Firefox 2 profile folder.

It is even possible to run both the Firefox 3 portable version and another Firefox version at the same time. To do that you need to create another profile for the portable version. Head over to my article that explains how to multiple Firefox profiles simultaneously.

Tweak Your Firefox for Super Fast Web Browsing!

Fast loading web pages while surfing the Internet may have more to do with your web browser settings and preferences than your Internet connection speed.

Try these easy Firefox tweaks and you’ll see that you’re surfing the Internet from 3 to 30 times faster!

  • To get started, open your Firefox web browser. In the address/location bar type about:config and then press your Enter key.
  • In the Filter bar type network.http.pipelining. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from False to True.
  • In the Filter bar type network.http.pipelining.maxrequests. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name and change the value from 4 to a higher number anywhere from 10 to 30. I set mine to 30.
  • In the Filter bar type network.http.proxy.pipelining. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from False to True.
  • In the Filter bar type network.dns.disableIPv6. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from False to True.
  • In the Filter bar type plugin.expose_full_path. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from False to True.
  • In the Filter bar type network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help. Now, you are going to create a new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in nglayout.initialpaint.delay and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type 0 (that’s a zero) and click OK.
  • In the Filter bar again type network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help. Now, you are going to create another new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in content.notify.backoffcount and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type 5 and click OK.
  • In the Filter bar again type network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help. Now, you are going to create another new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in ui.submenuDelay and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type 0 (that’s a zero) and click OK.

Now, close your web browser and restart it. You’ll see how much faster web pages are loading. I sure did.

Free Trustware Bufferzone Amazing protection!

When it comes to your security, no web browser is perfect - and no malware app is going to catch everything. I came across BufferZone Free a few weeks ago and have been running it since, and I’m pretty impressed.

BufferZone adds another layer of protection to your browser by setting up a sandbox (an isolated “virtual directory” on your hard drive). As Trustware puts it, the program “transparently redirects modifications in your PC to a virtual, isolated environment, so that unauthorized modifications cannot be applied to your actual PC.” Malicious apps can’t write changes to your actual system files or registry - only BufferZone’s virtualized versions. Anything you download - temp files, images, executables, you name it - gets sandboxed. Why is that a big deal?

Well, it only takes a split second for a malicious app to burrow its way into the deep, dark crevices of your operating system.

How does BufferZone help?

The sandbox keeps these nasties from going resident on your system and gives your malware defenses time to obliterate them before they can cause any harm. If I click on a link to a key generator, the hosting website redirects me to another page that spawns a browser hijacker installer. If that happens, BufferZone neatly puts it in the virtualized directory, and my anti-virus software kicks in and nukes the threat within two seconds.

To top it all off, there’s no appreciable difference in the rendering speed of your browser and no real impact on resources. On my system, the hit was 0% on the CPU and about 9MB of memory.

Slick. Very slick.

The program comes in both free and paid versions (which offers customization and protection of multiple browsers), but I’ll only talk about the free one here.

Download the 9MB .msi file and install it, and BufferZone sets up a protected, virtualized directory in c:\virtual\untrusted\. All activity from your selected browser will now be redirected here and isolated from your “real” operating system.

Before I go any further with this, I’ve got to tell you to NOT knowingly visit any sites that are likely to infect your computer. You’re asking for trouble. I was, too, but I had to find out whether this app was the real deal or not. I also tested BufferZone Free on IE7 from a bare Windows XP SP2 install with no other patches applied.

To put BufferZone through the paces, I decided to go on a little jaunt around some of the most nefarious sites I’m familiar with. I headed over to a keygen site, did a few searches, and watched BufferZone spring into action as it popped up several alerts for items that were landing in the sandbox. The beauty of it: my anti-virus software caught every single one of them and removed them with ease. I surfed around carelessly for a while longer and exited Internet Explorer at which point some other evildoers tried to invade my system, but BufferZone and Avast! once again tag-teamed them into submission.

After a reboot, I ran a full scan with Ad-Aware and HijackThis and couldn’t find any traces of anything remotely malicious. Wow. I’m impressed!

Here’s the kicker. Even in the free version, the app will protect not only your browser, but any process spawned by the browser. Download an attachment from your Gmail account and launch it with Word, and Word automatically inherits the BufferZone protection. This is huge; even if your webmail provider automatically scans attachments, no scan is perfect.

The program worked beautifully in my testing and it’s footprint wasn’t even noticable. For a free application with such terrific security potential, BufferZone Free is definitely worth a download. If you’re still not convinced, try out Trustware’s proof of concept.

If you’ve tried BufferZone, what do you think of it? Got something better that you’d recommend? Let’s hear about it!

Free TeamViewer for online computer support!

TeamViewer is a simple and fast solution for remote control which establishes connections to any PC behind any firewall and NAT proxy all around the world within just a few seconds. You can remote control your partner’s PC as if you were sitting right in front of it. There are more than 7 million users that trust TeamViewer. Let’s find out what is so good about it.

There are a bunch of useful features at the top bar of the remote screen. You can easily transfer file, start a chat session so you don’t need to open up notepad to chat with your partner, record remote access session to have a log on what you did, remote reboot and disable keyboard and mouse to prevent the other person from messing around when you’re doing your job. One of the weird feature is the “show black screen”. This feature will make the remote partner screen turns black so you can do whatever you want without letting the partner know what you did. It’s a little weird isn’t it?

Other than that, recently TeamViewer released a version for Mac OS. The new TeamViewer for Mac even supports cross-platform access so you are now able to connect to a Mac from your Windows machine and back! Since they have a Mac version, I believe they will start working on a Linux version pretty soon as Mac is built from Linux.

By default TeamViewer uses only the outgoing Port 80 (HTTP), so no firewall configuration is necessary. It is also advisable to open port 5938 for incoming connections which may result in faster point-to-point connections.

I’ve heard about TeamViewer for quite a long time already but I’ve never really tested it. Now that I’ve tested TeamViewer and I am glad I did, it would be my first choice whenever I need to remotely help someone with computer problems.

TeamViewer Features:

  • Encrypted Connection
  • No installation required
  • Works behind firewalls and routers
  • Chat
  • File Transfer
  • Record Remote Session
  • Support Multiple Monitor
  • Remote Reboot
  • Disable Remote Input
  • Show Black Screen
  • VPN
  • Supports Windows and Mac OS
  • Present my desktop to customer
  • [ Download TeamViewer ]
